Mission Possible
Creating a Mission Statement that Works
Your
organizations’ mission statement provides structure to the vision and
goals you set forth. This structure works to guide staff and to help
drive the scope of your work to meet your goals. A mission statement is
vital not only to the maintenance of a successful organization but to
the growth and continued success of its core values.
Those organizations with continuing education programs need to consider
creating a mission statement that applies specifically to their program.
This is consistent with the ACCME’s updated accreditation criteria. Your
mission statement should include the purpose of your program, the
general subject or content of your program, a description of your target
audience, the types of activities you provide, and the types of results
you expect.
The ACCME provides several samples to help you get started. A
sample
mission statement will help you understand the scope and direction your
statement can take. CFMC can help you decipher your mission statement
elements and understand the ACCME requirements. Together we can create a
road map for your success. For information on mission statements or
other continuing education questions, please contact Lorraine Pickrell

Case
Sensitive Education
Continuing Education with Case Studies
In a recent article from Meetingsnet, author Brandy Gray Lewis, BS,
CMP discussed ways to increase attendee involvement before, during, and
after an activity. The use of case studies has proven to be successful
for continuing education learners. Participants get involved in their
education which helps them retain the information. They are then more
likely to convert that education to practice. Lewis writes that “The
best results occur when organizations use the case study to connect with
participants before, during, and after a meeting. The repeated
connection and interaction with participants helps the message succeed
in the meeting and stick with the audience over time.”
Before the date of your activity, you can involve learners by
asking them to submit case studies for review by your continuing
education planning committee. During your activity those same
learners could present their cases for discussion during the
activity or at a breakout session. Once your activity is over,
continue the learner involvement by including those case studies,
along with those that weren’t selected, to the attendees on a CD or
in a program notebook. There are thousands of educational
opportunities available to learners, providing high interest and
high impact sessions will draw more attendees to your activity. To
find out how case studies will fit into the content of your activity
and what requirements are needed to meet accreditation standards,
